DOME INSIDE

 

We took the elevator up to the dome. There is a walkway inside the dome with a heavy metal grate. It’s a long way down. From here one can see mosaics up close. Pic. # 0469 shows the view of a mass in the chapel behind the main altar. It’s an incredible sculpture by Bernini of the “Chair of St. Peter”. We had been to daily mass several mornings there. One can also see the dome paintings (Pic # 0471) up close. From there Faye and I walked out onto the roof. There are walkways roped off. You see the statues on top of the façade from the back. Of course, the inevitable gift shop there also.
