TEXT PIAZZA NAVONA AND BERNINI’S FOUR RIVERS SCULPTURE

The square is an oblong shape because Emperor Domitian had a racetrack built here. The Four Rivers Fountain by Gian Loranzo Bernini of St. Peter’s Colonade fame sculpted four burly river gods representing the four continents known in 1650. The Nile, Danube, Ganges and Rio de la Plata. We all had wonderful “death by chocolate” ice cream cones. We sat and rested here awhile. It’s lovely.
